DRS-UFF: Automated Precision Milling of Ultra Flat Floors

LASER CAMEL meets all requirements for ultra-flat industrial floors

In automated high-bay warehouses, logistic and data centers as well as production facilities high-precision (ultra flat) industrial floors are required for the safe and efficient operation of driverless transport systems.

As floor quality improves, the achievable speeds and precision of the material handling systems increase, while maintenance and downtime are reduced. Even the smallest unevenness can cause vibrations, wear or misalignment of transport systems.

In new buildings such floors can be produced using laser-guided screed laying machines. However, these methods are usually unsuitable for existing floors or involve high costs and downtime. Therefore, only mechanical processing by grinding or milling can be used in these cases.

Traditional floor grinding technologies, however, follow the existing floor profile and reproduce unevenness. Modern laser and sensor-controlled milling concepts, on the other hand, create a new reference plane with tight tolerances. The Dr. Schulze Group will launch such a technology on the European market for the first time in 2026.

Leading instead of following

The core of the process is the high-performance LASER CAMEL floor milling machine with an active guidance system. Unlike conventional machines, it adjusts the milling depth and travel path fully automatically, orienting itself to a predefined laser reference plane. The travel path is controlled with an accuracy of up to 3 mm, which is particularly crucial for VNA aisles. Local bumps or dips do not affect the resulting final flatness.

An integrated milling head tilt control system keeps the milling head either in a strictly horizontal position or at a preset tilt angle, enabling precise machining of ramps, slopes and transitions of VNA areas. Optionally, the machine can also be used without laser control for conventional surface preparation or for exposing aggregates.

Productive and economical

The fully gear-driven design reduces maintenance and increases operational reliability. Milling depths can be adjusted in 0.25 mm increments, up to a maximum of 25 mm per pass. The fine milled texture can be removed with a single subsequent grinding pass. With an average milling depth of 5 mm, daily outputs of 350–400 m² are possible. Productivity gains result from high material removal rates, automated control, minimal subsequent processing, dry way of working and compact equipment dimensions. The achieved flatness meets international standards such as EN 15620, DIN 15185 VDMA, ACI F-min and TR34.

Other system components

LASER CAMEL is complemented by the self-propelled and remote-controlled WOLF MAX dust extraction system for dust-free operation, as well as high-performance grinding machines for narrow aisle and large-area applications. The milling/extraction package can be operated by a single operator.

With LASER CAMEL the Dr. Schulze Group presents a compelling technological innovation in the construction of ultra-flat industrial floors. The combination of laser guidance, sensors and precise depth control enables reproducible flatness, high efficiency and significant time and cost savings. Achievable flatness values of ±1 mm over a length of 50 m underscore its suitability for the most demanding precision requirements.
